Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care is a patient-centered, hands-on approach to health and well that involves improving and optimizing your body's function through structural corrections to restore function and balance to the nervous system. A chiropractor uses case history, physical examination, and perhaps laboratory testing or X-rays to evaluate your current health status. In addition, the chiropractor will focus on a structural examination of your spine and extremities.
A common misconception is that chiropractors work only with bones and joints, but we really are doctors of the nervous system. Running through the bones of your back, or vertebrae, is your spinal cord. The spinal cord is vital to the body because it allows signals from the master control center, the brain, to reach all the tissues in the body and for the body to send signals back to the brain. Those signals allow the brain to know how things are functioning in the body or if there is a problem.
As most people are aware, this nervous tissue is vitally important with dire consequences such as paralysis or even death resulting from damage to your spinal cord. Coming off of your spinal cord are many nerves that pass through the vertebrae and travel throughout the body, branching into smaller nerves as they go to reach even the tip of your toes. These nerves are responsible for controlling everything from digestion and breathing to muscle movement. Your body also uses these nerves as a communication system, sending messages back and forth from different areas of your body back to your spinal cord and up to the brain. The same works the other way around.
Sometimes the bones in your back that protect the nerves can become slightly misaligned and stuck into position. This results inflammation in the area and leads to irritation and compression of the nerves. When this happens, the delicate nerve tissue that sends signals to and from the brain has difficulty relaying the signals properly. Chiropractors refer to this as a subluxation. Imagine the telephone game that you played as a child where you told someone a phrase, they passed it on over and over, and finally the message that was received by the last person differed greatly from the original one you started! Imagine that happening all over your body and you can imagine that problems will result.
Nerve interference or subluxation can manifest as an array of symptoms. Most of the general public thinks of pain, but really pain only accounts for about 10% of the nervous systems function. Remember how we talked about the nerves controlling everything? Because of that, really any symptom may be caused by nerve interference.
